Due to hormonal changes and other factors, your oral health is especially vulnerable when you are pregnant.  Some dental tips can protect you from gum disease during pregnancy.

1.  Visit your dentist- The best time to schedule an appointment for an exam and cleaning is before you become pregnant.  If you have not done so, visit as soon as you learn of your pregnancy.
2.  Keep your teeth and gums clean- To avoid gum disease, you must keep your teeth and gums free from bacteria and plaque.  Brush and floss after every meal.
3.  Use an antibacterial mouthwash- You should use mouthwash as part of your oral care routine, but it is especially useful for pregnant women.  Rinse your mouth thoroughly with mouthwash each time you experience morning sickness.
4.  Adhere to a nutritious diet- During pregnancy, your diet is very important.  Make sure you have a healthy, balanced diet every day.  Choose foods from the four basic food groups every day so you have all the vitamins and minerals you need.  Not only is nutrition essential for your baby, it will help you maintain oral health.  Avoid sweets and junk food, even if you experience cravings.
5.  Stay alert to symptoms of gum issues- If your gums become inflamed, swollen, or red, talk to your dentist.  Bleeding gums should also be brought to your dentist’s attention.  Early signs of gum disease should not wait for your next regular appointment.  Treatment can prevent serious problems in the future.
Pregnancy is an exciting time in your life.  As gum disease can increase the risk of premature birth and a low birth weight baby, the months of your pregnancy should include basic dentistry and home oral care.  You can have an easier pregnancy, a healthier baby, and start motherhood with oral health.
