Periodontal Disease and Pregnancy

Screen Shot 2016-04-13 at 10.39.10 AMDental health is often the last thing on a pregnant woman’s mind. She is focused primarily on the health and safety of her baby, rather than her own health. The last week of April is National Infertility Week, which means there is no better time to become educated on the effects poor oral hygiene can have on a newborn baby.

A recent study done by the Journal of Periodontology found that pregnant women with periodontal disease are at a higher risk of delivering a low birth weight baby. The study concluded that “Mothers with periodontitis were six times likelier to have a child with low birth weight, after adjusting for confounding factors.” It is extremely important for mothers to take care of their own health so they can in turn take care of their baby’s health.
