Research and technology is continuously evolving and with it comes the ability to better identify and treat disease. Unlike many offices, Dr. McClatchie utilizes OralDNA saliva testing with Scaling and Root Planing to treat you individually. This is especially important with patients who are at a high risk for medical diseases. With just traditional Scaling and Root Planing, it is possible for bacteria to enter the blood stream and travel through the body, potentially having detrimental effects. However with the assistance of these saliva tests, Dr. McClatchie can treat your infection specifically to prevent such episodes.
Scaling and Root Planing
When a patient has a comprehensive periodontal evaluation and is diagnosed with periodontal (gum) disease, it means they have pockets of infection in the tissues around their teeth which if untreated, can cause tooth loss and sometimes contribute to systemic disease. Like other infections, the earlier it is treated, the more likely it can be controlled. Skilled dental hygienists treat periodontal disease with non surgical therapy. Non surgical therapy includes saliva testing to identify the bacteria causing the disease, prescribing topical or systemic antibiotics, comprehensive scaling and root planing, instructing the patient to use home care aids and oral health products and ongoing three month maintenance procedures.
The goal of periodontal therapy
The goal of periodontal therapy is to create an environment for healing, reducing deep pockets of infection so the tooth brush and floss can be more effective, removing calculus, stains and bacteria from the teeth and in the pockets, reducing bad breath, reducing the number of bad bacteria before they increase the risk for systemic diseases. i.e. heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pre-term births (read more on Oral systemic page).
Saliva testing for periodontal bacteria
Saliva testing for periodontal bacteria tells the dentist what kind of bacteria is causing the infection and if the patient would benefit from taking an oral antibiotic during therapy. Treating each patient more specifically yields better long term results.
Scaling and root planing is done with an ultrasonic instrument, removing bacterial plaque and calculus [tartar] from the teeth and deep periodontal pockets and smoothing the tooth root, creating an environment for healing.
Locally placed Antibiotics
In the more advanced areas of periodontal disease, a time released antibiotic powder or gel is placed in the deeper pockets to kill any remaining bacteria for twenty eight days.
Dr. McClatchie’s office recommends the use of Philips’ Sonicare line of toothbrushes. This line specifically allows for greater vibration along the gum line, causing a break-up of the bacteria biofilm, specifically beneath the gum lines where toothbrushes cannot reach.
Not all bacteria is bad for the body. In fact, the body needs bacteria to help with its functions. EvoraPro is a probiotic that is designed to promote oral microflora, bacteria that promotes good health in the mouth; and it also freshens breath and whitens teeth.
AO Pro Products
AO Pro products work in harmony with the mouth’s saliva, which naturally has antioxidants and anti-bacterial agents. With the utilization of these products, the gums of the mouth heal faster and become much more comfortable and healthy. The products utilized by Dr. McClatchie’s office have a whitening component for the teeth as well.
This natural toothpaste contains fluoride, calcium and phosphate to strengthen teeth, reverse white spots, and gently clean while providing gentle whitening.
PerioMed Oral Rinse
PerioMed is a fluoride rinse containing antimicrobial agents that assists in managing tooth sensitivity, tooth decay, plaque accumulation, and gum disease. PerioMed lowers the inflammatory level in the mouth, and assists in healing.
Fluoride and/or Varnish is a service provided to adults and children to reduce risk of decay, minimize root sensitivity and strengthen the teeth around crown edges.
