September is National Gum Care Month. Gum disease can develop for a number of reasons and is considered a “silent disease” because you are not always able to detect the active infection. Gingivitis is the first stage of gum disease, and the easiest to treat if it is caught early enough. However, if it is not treated properly, it can become more serious and lead to complications like periodontal disease and even tooth loss.
How do you prevent this? The solution can be as simple as practicing proper oral hygiene and visiting your dentist on a regular basis. The next step is becoming educated on the initial signs and symptoms of gum disease in order to best protect your gums and teeth. You should also receive frequent periodontal charting to get your personal grade card of gum health.
